750 SD Tail Prep & Priming

Final Prep And Priming

Well, the final day of prepping the Zenith 750 SD tail arrived and I got it all finished in time to start priming.

I had a gallon can of P60G2 nearly empty which I used first when I started painting. Sadly, I found that my cheap spray gun from Harbor Freight was sputtering and nothing I did made any difference. Consequently, once I had finished spraying the smaller parts I cleaned up and left the larger parts until I had purchased a new spray gun.

The P60G2 catalyst reducer is supposed to be mixed 1.5:1 with the primer but as you will find around the internet, in order to get a lighter coating pretty much everyone uses a 2:1 ratio. It definitely seems to go on more smoothly and you can get a better atomization and lighter coat.

These pics are really just more of the scuffing, deburring and cleaning variety, with some of the pieces coming out of the paint shop primed. You will see my friend Randy Williams wandering around helping but staying outside of the spraying area as he had no ppe.

At the end of the day I went and purchased a new spray gun from Harbor Freight, a $70 model, to spray the larger parts of the tail. This spray gun has metal nozzles and is a much smoother operating gun than the $30 version so if you are needing one, I would recommend the more expensive gun. You can buy new nozzles but they are almost as expensive as buying the whole gun. I did take the pressure regulator off the cheaper gun and put it onto the more expensive one and that seemed to work fine.

Apparently I forgot to turn the cameras on when finishing the priming but there wouldn’t have been much to see as I was in the paint shop most of the time and there is no camera in the paint shop. Completing the priming did not take long, a couple of hours maybe.
