We had previously completed the horizontal stabilizer assembly described in section 8 and had also, in fact started some of the initial preparation for the RV-10 elevators. Most of that initial prep was related to the removal of the vinyl protection and the separation of the E-1008-A and B stiffeners.
We deburred all of the elevator parts as indicated in step 2 on page 9-2. Due to the separation of the A and B parts this took a little while as the edges cut by the Wiss shears tended to be a little bent and also to have some small serrations in the metal. I’ve read that beginners tend to overly stress the deburring, but then I have also read that things like the serrations caused by shears focus stresses that can lead to cracks. It’s a fine balance between overdoing the deburring and not doing enough.
Section 9, this section of the tail kit manual, at least in my version, is by far the worst in terms of information and consistency. I’ll cover some of that a little later.
We collected all of the elevator parts we could onto the primary bench we use for building and really just got ready to start the process of assembling the next day. We had previously also final drilled the spar doublers so they were all ready to go.
