I started the Vans RV-10 tailcone assembly today by “deburring” / chamfering the edges of each of the flanges on the bulkheads that we had prepped yesterday. I think a lot of this wasn’t necessary, but I wanted to try and be certain that I would not end up with kinks or creases in the tailcone skin when it is all assembled and riveted together.
After EJ arrived we moved on to trimming the 8ft and 6ft J channel to make the F-1047 pieces. I started with the longest pieces and worked my way down to the shortest pieces to make sure I did not accidentally cut a short stiffener from one of the 8ft pieces. We missed the instruction somehow to cut the stiffeners to 45 degrees so had to come back and do that after cutting and notching the F-1032-R & -L longerons.
These snapshots are me working on the bulkhead flange faceting per section 5.2
These next snapshots are of EJ and I working on cutting the stiffeners from the ft and 6ft lengths per steps 2 through 4 on page 10-5. We used my cheapo disk sander to complete the 45 degree angles at each end.
We carried on with page 10-6, cutting the F-1032-L & -R longerons from the angle provided, and then drilling the 1/4″ hole and notch in the sides. We did not get to make the 2 degree bends so that will be job number 2 when we restart. Job number 1 will be completing the elevators and trim tabs now that the fuel tank sealant has had 72 hours to cure.
That was it, the end of the second day of Vans RV-10 tailcone assembly. The RV-10 tailcone assembly will continue next session.
